English for Speakers of Other Languages

Vocational & BTEC
What will I learn?

Adult students join us for many reasons:  to gain confidence, to help their children with homework, to communicate with teachers and doctors, to be more involved with their community and to gain employability skills. We offer English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes throughout the city. We assess reading, writing, speaking and listening.  The speaking exams are classroom based which can help some learners feel less anxious. ESOL courses are also available as intensive short courses or part time across 1 year. Classes are very popular so get filled quickly, please call as soon as possible to express your interest.

At Joseph Chamberlain College, we offer a range of English courses for Adult Learners, so you will need an initial assessment so we can determine which level is the most suitable starting place for you. If you are a native or fairly fluent English speaker, you may be able to begin studying at Level 1 (Pre GCSE) and progress to Level 2 (GCSE Equivalent) in one year. If you don’t yet speak any English, you will need to begin at Pre Entry Level and will progress through the levels below:

  • Pre Entry Level
  • Entry Level 1
  • Entry Level 2
  • Entry Level 3
  • Level 1
  • Level 2
Entry Requirements

You will either already have a qualification at the level below, or an initial assessment will determine that this is the course most suited to you.

How long is the course?

We offer short, intensive courses at some of our centres, along with part-time one year courses. The length of study depends on how strong your English language skills are when you begin the course but you can expect to progress roughly two levels during one year if you study part time.

What qualification will I get?

You will receive an ESB ESOL certificate for each module you achieve.

Progression: What Can I Do After This Course?

Generally entry level adult learners progress to the next level of English at the College, join access courses or study Functional Skills. English skills will also boost your employment prospects in entry level roles.

I like that the times of lessons are suitable, especially for ladies who have children in school. The environment is very quiet and safe. The staff are very friendly and supportive, and use modern methods of learning.
