How can we support you?
At JCC, we are highly experienced in supporting students with special educational needs and/or disabilities. We promote an inclusive learning experience for all and will make personal adjustments that suit your needs. Following disclosure of your individual learning/medical needs, a member of our friendly Inclusive Learning Support team will liaise with you to craft a bespoke support and care plan. This will occur prior to the first day in the classroom to ensure that the amount of support you need is provided in time for the first day of teaching.
Assistive Technology
We encourage and promote the use of assistive technology so that you can be independent with your studies. You will be supported throughout your use of technologies, and we will guide you on how to make the most of them; examples include screen readers, speech recognition technology, amplification equipment, magnifiers, reading pens, overlays/reading rulers, etc.
If you’re using specific aids already that aren’t provided by us, don’t worry; we will help weave any existing technology or aids you’re already using into your studies.
We’ve also integrated a ‘Recite Me’ toolbar into the website to make it as inclusive as possible. With this toolbar, you can change the language, have any written text spoken aloud to you in various languages, zoom in and out at your leisure, and even make all the surrounding text blank to focus on the part you need. Just click the ‘Accessibility’ button in the top left to access this. If you would like to learn more about Recite Me, you can access their website by clicking here.
The Pod
The Pod is a dedicated space for you to escape the hustle and bustle of college life. It offers a place for you to work in near silence with other individuals who may sometimes find the fast pace of college hard to cope with, daunting, or overwhelming. When LSAs are not in class, they will be available to support you in a small group or even on a 1:1 basis to help you catch up with your studies or discuss your concerns.
Key Workers
You will be assigned a dedicated, friendly, and knowledgeable key worker who will act as a familiar go-to face throughout your time at college. Your key worker will be in regular contact with you to ensure you get the support you need while you are enrolled with us. Their support could range from (but is not limited to) assistance with classes to a more discreet approach where they help you develop independence throughout your course. Don’t hesitate to approach your key worker; they will be around to help you with any support you want or need.
Individualised Support Plans
An Individualised Support Plan (ISP) is something that is developed between you and your key worker. The development will start at the beginning of the academic year and will be maintained throughout your JCC journey to ensure your needs and required support arrangements are clearly reported to your teachers and other relevant members of staff or professionals.
Access Arrangements Specialist
A qualified, on-site access arrangements specialist will be around to ensure you are supported appropriately during exams and assessments throughout your journey with us. Our building is also fully wheelchair accessible with step-free access to the ground floor, lifts to all levels, spacious accessible toilets, and reserved parking bays.
