University of Pittsburgh Students Visit JCC
Joseph Chamberlain College recently welcomed 17 students and academics from the University of Pittsburgh into the college as part of a programme organised by Birmingham City University.
These students visited JCC for a day of lesson observations and stimulating discussions regarding teaching and learning led by the college’s Associate Assistant Principal, Tom Williams.
Students and academics focussed their observations on strategies to support excellent student outcomes, overcoming difficulties, and providing students with timely and beneficial assessment and feedback. The immersive experience provided the students with valuable insights into the teaching pedagogy and approaches that have supported the College’s recent Outstanding grading by OFSTED.
The observations nurtured a deeper understanding of how learning experiences are shaped for students and the level of teaching expected at Birmingham’s only Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ sixth form college. One student stated: “Having a college set up in this way creates the perfect atmosphere for students to thrive and succeed in the future. It is for these reasons that Joseph Chamberlain College has consistently received an outstanding ranking from the OFSTED.”
After their visit, one visiting student commented: “The assistant principal was brilliant and had such a deep passion and understanding of how to run a classroom effectively. I almost wish I could have brought my family members who are educators today to listen to his lecture and observe the college atmosphere in the UK.”
The visiting academics also explored JCC’s campus, gaining further insight into not only their educational practices but also the buildings, vocational opportunities, and overall community that the college nurtures. They mentioned that “this culture creates effective education and preparation for students obtaining higher education at university or in areas of apprenticeship.”
Joseph Chamberlain College would like to thank the representatives from Birmingham City University and all visitors from the University of Pittsburgh for their valuable visit.
