JCC Extra – Food Bank Society
Joseph Chamberlain College’s Food Bank Society has set up a Donation Station within the college that accepts toiletries and non-perishable food from both staff and students. The Donation Station will be running throughout the entire academic year, with deliveries to local food banks happening fortnightly.
The college’s students are at the forefront of the society, deciding which items to accept and which food banks to donate to. Most recently, the college donated to Green Lane Food Bank. The participating students have stated that this is a valuable experience, helping them to develop leadership skills, research skills, resource management skills, and critical thinking skills, as well as nurturing their compassion and empathy.
Two Food Bank Coordinators, Grace and Ellen Broadbelt, have gone above and beyond within the Food Bank Society, organising weekly meetings to compile and count the donations and plan future deliveries. Grace and Ellen are both second-year Health and Social Care students with aspirations to progress to university to study Primary Education and Children’s Nursing, respectively.
Grace said, “I’m happy that it gives me a chance to help people who can’t afford basic necessities.” Ellen added, “It’s a good experience to have, and I’ve learnt lots of new things from it.”
Joseph Chamberlain College would like to thank all of its Food Bank Coordinators for their continued efforts and everyone who has donated so far.
