This course is for students whose mother tongue is not English. Our Intensive English Pre-GCSE course is offered at beginner, elementary, intermediate, and advanced levels. All applicants to this course will be asked to sit an examination to assess the ideal level to undertake before the course begins. This course will improve your speaking, listening, reading, writing, and grammar skills.
Course Assessment
This course is assessed throughout the entire academic year, with a final examination taking place in the Summer Term. The assessment consists of the following strands:
– Speaking & Listening
– Reading & Writing
After successfully completing this course, you will achieve NOCN ESOL Skills for Life qualifications.

Entry Requirements
- No formal qualifications required
- Suitable for learners with limited English skills
- An initial assessment may be required to place you at the appropriate level
- You must be aged 16 or 17 at the point of enrolment

ESOL Application Process
Before your place on an ESOL course can be confirmed, you will need to complete our application process. This process helps us check that you meet the entry requirements, collect the information we need to support you during your studies, and make sure you are placed on the right course level.
There are four stages to this process:
Before you can enrol on an ESOL course, we must check that you meet the eligibility requirements to study at Joseph Chamberlain Sixth Form College.
During this stage, we will collect important information about you, including:
Personal Details
You will need to provide:
- Your full name
- Date of birth
- Home address
- Postcode
- Telephone numbers
- Email address
- Gender
- Your age on 31 August 2026
This information helps us create your student record and contact you about your application and enrolment.
Education and Background Information
We will ask you about:
- Your previous education
- Your current situation (for example, whether you are studying, working or looking for work)
- The languages you speak
This helps us understand your background and make sure we provide the right support.
Additional Support Needs
You will be asked whether you have:
- A disability
- A learning difficulty
- A medical condition that may affect your studies
Sharing this information helps us provide appropriate support during your time at JCC.
Residency and Eligibility Checks
We need to confirm that you meet the funding and residency requirements for your course.
You will be asked:
- Have you lived in the UK/EU for the last three years?
- If not, which country have you been living in?
You may need to provide documents to confirm your eligibility.
Criminal Convictions
You will be asked whether you have any:
- Spent convictions
- Unspent convictions
- Pending convictions
Please answer honestly. This information is collected to ensure appropriate support and safeguarding arrangements are in place.
Emergency Contact Details
You must provide an emergency contact where possible.
This should include:
- Name and surname
- Relationship to you
- Telephone numbers
This person will only be contacted if there is an emergency.
Documents Required
You may need to provide copies of documents, including:
- British Passport
- Non-UK Passport
- Immigration documents
- GOV.UK Share Code
- Section 20 Social Services Letter (if applicable)
- Any other documents requested by the College
Your enrolment cannot continue until the required eligibility checks and documents have been completed.
During Stage 2, we check that all personal information provided during your application is correct. A member of the Pastoral Team will complete this check before your enrolment can continue.
This information is needed to create your official student record at Joseph Chamberlain Sixth Form College.
We will check details such as:
- Your name and contact information
- Your date of birth
- Your address
- Emergency contact information
- Equality and support information
- Information required for funding purposes
Providing accurate information is important because it allows us to:
- Contact you about your course
- Provide the right support
- Meet our legal responsibilities
- Keep your student record accurate
Your personal information is stored securely and only shared with organisations where we are legally required to do so.
During this stage, we check your previous education and assess your current level of English.
The purpose of the assessment is to make sure you are placed on the correct ESOL course level. This helps you study at a level that is suitable for your current skills and allows you to make the best progress.
English Assessment
You will complete an ESOL assessment with a member of the ESOL Team.
The assessment helps us decide the most appropriate course level for you.
Course Levels
Depending on your assessment results, you may be offered a place on one of the following ESOL levels:
- Pre-entry
- Beginner
- Elementary
- Intermediate
- Advanced
Your final course choice will be based on your assessment result and the advice of the ESOL Team.
Completing the Academic Check
Before your enrolment can be confirmed:
- Your assessment must be completed
- Your course level must be agreed
- Any required references or supporting information must be received
- A suitable place must be available
Once Stages 1, 2 and 3 have been completed and approved, you can move to Stage 4 – Learning Agreement and your enrolment can be confirmed.
The final stage of enrolment requires you to carefully read and understand the following agreements and notices. Please take your time to read all information carefully before confirming your enrolment at Joseph Chamberlain Sixth Form College.
Student ICT Acceptable Use and E-Safety Agreement
I understand that I must use college ICT systems in a responsible way, to ensure that there is no risk to my safety or to the safety and security of the ICT systems and other users.
For my own personal safety:
- I understand that the college will monitor my use of the systems, devices and digital communications.
- I will keep my username and password safe and secure – I will not share it, nor will I try to use any other person’s username and password. I understand that I should not write down or store a password where it is possible that someone may steal it.
- I will be aware of “stranger danger”, when I am communicating on-line.
- I will not disclose or share personal information about myself or others when on-line
- If I arrange to meet people off-line that I have communicated with on-line, I will do so in a public place and take an adult with me.
- I will immediately report to a member of staff any unpleasant, inappropriate or extremist material or messages or anything that makes me feel uncomfortable when I see it on-line.
I understand that everyone has equal rights to use technology as a resource and:
- I understand that the college systems and devices are primarily intended for educational use and that I will not use them for personal or recreational use unless I have permission.
- I will not try (unless I have permission) to make large downloads or uploads that might take up internet capacity and prevent other users from being able to carry out their work.
I will act online as I expect others to act toward me:
- I will respect others’ work and property and will not access, copy, remove or otherwise alter any other user’s files, without the owner’s knowledge and permission.
- I will be polite and responsible when I communicate with others, I will not use strong, aggressive or inappropriate language and I appreciate that others may have different opinions.
- I will not take or distribute images of anyone without their permission or if they are inappropriate or illegal.
I recognise that the college has a responsibility to maintain the security and integrity of the technology it offers me and to ensure the smooth running of the college:
- I will only use my own personal devices (mobile phones / USB devices etc) in college if I have permission. I understand that, if I do use my own devices in the college, I will follow the rules set out in this agreement, in the same way as if I was using college equipment.
- I understand the risks and will not try to upload, download or access any materials which are illegal or inappropriate or may cause harm or distress to others including material of an extremist nature, nor will I try to use any programmes or software that might allow me to bypass the filtering / security systems in place to prevent access to such materials.
- I will immediately report any damage or faults involving equipment or software, however this may have happened.
- I will not open any hyperlinks in emails or any attachments to emails, unless I know and trust the person / organisation who sent the email, or if I have any concerns about the validity of the email
- I will not install or attempt to install or store programmes of any type on any college device, nor will I try to alter computer settings.
When using the internet for research or recreation, I recognise that:
- I should ensure that I have permission to use the original work of others in my own work
- Where work is protected by copyright, I will not try to download copies (including music and videos)
- When I am using the internet to find information, I should take care to check that the information that I access is accurate, as I understand that the work of others may not be truthful and may be a deliberate attempt to mislead me.
I understand that I am responsible for my actions, both in and out of college:
- I understand that the college also has the right to take action against me if I am involved in incidents of inappropriate behaviour, either on line or using social media, that are covered in this agreement, when I am out of college and where they involve my membership of the college community
- I understand that if I fail to comply with this Acceptable Use Policy Agreement, I will be subject to disciplinary action.
Privacy Notice
We process your personal data for compliance with our legal obligations. Whilst the majority of student information you provide to us is mandatory, some is provided voluntarily. We will, subject to any other notices that we provide to you, retain your personal data for a period of seven years from the date of your enrolment at the College. However, some information may be retained indefinitely by us to maintain your academic record for archiving. We do not share information about our students with anyone without consent unless the law and our policies allow us to do so. We share data with the Department for Education (DfE) on a statutory basis. We are required to share information about students with our Local Education Authority (LEA) and the Department for Education (DfE) using their powers under Section 14 of the Education Act 2002, through the Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA). If we use data relating to ethnicity, disability or health, this is for equal opportunities and to improve the quality of teaching and learning. We will process special category information under Article 6 to comply with the GDPR. Joseph Chamberlain Sixth Form College has internal policies and controls in place to make sure your personal information is not lost, inaccurate, accidentally destroyed, misused or disclosed. The College takes the protection of your data very seriously. Examples of the types of data we collect include your name and contact details, attendance information, information related to a health or medical condition that may impact on learning, and information to determine eligibility for financial support at the College.

How we use your personal information:
This privacy notice is issued by the Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA), on behalf of the Secretary of State for the Department of Education (DfE). JCC Expectations (A, B, C)
It is a condition of enrolment at the College that you agree to meet JCC Expectations.
- A = Attendance and Punctuality.You are required to attend every lesson on time.
- B = Behaviour.You are required to demonstrate positive, mature, and respectful behaviour.
- C = Commitment.You are required to show full commitment to all studies and activities.
The College reserves the right to take disciplinary action against you if you do not meet these expectations and in serious breaches of ‘A, B, C’ the College has the right to withdraw your place at college.
In addition, the college reserves the right to make changes to your programme of studies or withdraw you from part or all your programme of studies, for any other valid reason. You have a right to appeal against any decisions you believe are wrong or unfair.
