JCC Becomes Birmingham’s First Sixth Form College to Achieve ‘Very Good’ Active Travel Accreditation

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – 11th SEPTEMBER 2026

Joseph Chamberlain College has reached a significant milestone in its work to promote more sustainable ways of travelling, achieving Very Good accreditation through Modeshift STARS.

The accreditation reflects a programme of work developed since September 2024 in partnership with Transport for West Midlands and Modeshift STARS, with the College introducing a range of initiatives designed to encourage active travel among students and staff.

JCC first achieved a Good Travel Plan Award during the 2024/25 academic year. Since then, the College has continued to strengthen its approach, introducing further activity during 2025/26 and progressing to the Very Good level.

The latest accreditation is particularly significant as JCC is now the first sixth form college in Birmingham to achieve this standard and one of only a small number of workplaces in the city currently recognised at this level.

The College’s work has also received national recognition from AoC Sport, with JCC awarded Highly Commended in the Sustainability in Sport category at the 2026 AoC Sport Awards.

Together, the two achievements recognise a sustained effort to make active and sustainable travel a more visible part of college life, supported by the Sports Department and colleagues across JCC.

The College will continue to build on this work, strengthening its travel initiatives and encouraging choices that support health, wellbeing and environmental responsibility.
