Falak’s Journey: From JCC to a Future in Forensic Accounting
Falak is an exceptional student who has recently graduated from Joseph Chamberlain College (JCC), where she excelled academically, completing A-Levels in History, Business, and Maths with grades B, B, B. She is now moving on to study Mathematics with Business Management at the University of Birmingham, ready to take the next step in her academic and professional journey.
Choosing JCC and Growing in Confidence
Falak always knew that she would attend JCC, following in the footsteps of her sister. “One of the things that stood out to me from the start was the support,” she recalls. “I struggled a lot in secondary school because I wasn’t getting the support I needed. Here, it was completely different. For example, one of my maths teachers stayed behind to help me with work I was struggling with, even when it was time to go home.”
Over her two years at JCC, Falak grew both academically and socially. “I’ve become a lot more confident,” she explains. “The thing I’m most proud of is becoming the person I wanted to be. At the start of first year, I came in because I had to, but as I settled in, I came in because I genuinely wanted to.”
Embracing Every Opportunity
Falak embraced the full range of opportunities JCC offers, taking part in academic challenges, enrichment activities, sports, and societies to make the most of her time at college. “From competitions and workshops to sports teams and societies, I made a point of trying everything I could, building both skills and friendships along the way,” she says.
She participated in the National Maths Cipher Challenge, helping to decode scripts as part of a team. “The challenge was really fun, and it made me realise maths wasn’t just about numbers. I definitely wouldn’t have spoken in class in first year, but after taking part, especially being the only first year, I felt confident to speak in class, and I’m so glad I took part.”
As a Holocaust Educational Trust ambassador, Falak visited Auschwitz and delivered presentations at her former secondary school. “It was really nice to be on the teaching side. At one point, I wanted to teach history, so this experience was meaningful, and it was nice to teach the year 8 students.”
She also attended the EY employability workshop, where she developed networking skills and helped her table win “best brand” for a business proposal. Beyond these experiences, Falak got involved in a variety of enrichment activities, including sports, debating, and history societies, participating wherever she could. “If I never joined the netball team, I would have never made friends with some of my closest friends,” she says.
Additionally, she took on the important role of Fixture Secretary for JCC Netball, coordinating schedules, liaising with teams, and passing messages between staff and students. “It definitely helped me build confidence and improve my communication skills,” she said.
Falak’s determination to get involved in as many activities as possible not only helped her grow in confidence but also shaped her college experience into a truly memorable journey.
Recognition and Awards
Falak’s dedication and achievements were recognised through her winning three awards at JCC’s annual Student of the Year Awards and one at JCC’s Sports Awards – an outstanding accomplishment.
At the Student of the Year Awards, she received the Maths Award for her contributions during the Cipher Challenge, the Business Award for her willingness to support her peers, and the Progress Award for her exceptional 100% attendance.
At JCC’s Sports Awards, Falak won the Excellent Contribution Award for her leadership and organisation in college sports, and for her outstanding efforts as Fixture Secretary for JCC Netball.
“Winning these awards was really motivating and put me in the right headspace for second year,” she reflects.
A standout moment came during the JCC Sports Awards Ceremony, where Falak felt the full support of the college community. “When it came to the section about excellent contribution, everyone was looking at me because they knew I would win. It was such a lovely feeling to know everyone wanted me to win this award, and I was so proud.”
Looking Ahead
Falak believes her time at JCC has prepared her exceptionally well for university. “Before JCC, I would have gone to university unconfident. Now, I feel ready to take part in lectures, seminars, and societies.”
Her advice to new students is simple but powerful: “Just try things. Even if you don’t like it, at least you’ve tried. And if you’re struggling with lessons, communicate with your teachers – they will provide support.”
Falak concludes with high praise for the college: “I think that JCC really is a great college, and it’s ‘Outstanding’ in Ofsted for a reason.”
A Proud College
As a college, JCC is incredibly proud of Falak and all that she has achieved during her time at JCC. Her academic excellence, determination, and involvement in the college’s many opportunities exemplify the supportive and nurturing environment the college strives to provide. Everyone at JCC wishes Falak every success as she takes the next step on her journey at the University of Birmingham and beyond.
